What Are The Best Survival Water Filters In 2018?

Dirty water has been the downfall of many preppers and survivalists.

Dirty water is one of the most dangerous things in all of God's green earth. It can carry all sorts of deadlies like giardia, e-coli, salmonella, cholera, and so on.

If you don't know what any of those are and don't want to waste five seconds searching, just know this: dirty water can give you diarrhea, cause you to vomit, make you infertile, and kill you painfully.

Sound fun?

No. No it doesn't.

So to prevent any untimely deaths or any illnesses you don't want while drinking your nearest water source, we recommend getting a nice water filter and water purifier.

In the glories of the modern times, these are usually the same thing and since you're on this site, you probably want to know the best ones to buy.

So here's our in depth review of the best water filters and water purifiers of 2018. If you don't want to read the whole review, here's a nice table inserted by our lovely graphic designer:

Who Needs A Survival Water Filter?

Survival water filters are great for anyone planning to drink water from a source that hasn't been purified or cleansed by the good old US of A.

Specifically, survival water filters and purifiers are great for those who spend some time out in the wild.

Whether it's a long hike, some time spent in the woods, or you just want to drink from your local swimming hole, a survival water filter is probably for you.

What Survival Water Filters Can Do

First, we need to explain the difference between a survival water filter and a regular water filter.

Regular water filters are great. They really are. But they aren't given the sleek and efficient design that a survival water filter is made with.

Survival water filters are made to be carried and usually only consist of a bulky straw. Some have a bag or bladder included to store your newly-pure water, but others are just a straw.

These are made to be carried.

The function of a filter is pretty obvious: it makes water clean enough for you to drink.

The best water filters (the ones we're reviewing) protect against quite a lot of nasties and deadlies. A few of these are...

  • E-coli
  • Campylobacter
  • Chollera
  • Salmonella
  • Cryptosporidium (Not related to Bitcoin)
  • And more...

How To Choose The Best Water Filter For You

There isn't a huge amount of variation in what water filters do as there is in how long they last.

All the filters on this list will make it pretty safe to drink from a lake or running stream that you aren't quite sure about.

Some will last for your entire life while others are only good for a few hundred uses.

All filters take out bacteria and protozoa, but some are better at removing pesticides and heavy metals.

Ultimately, the perfect filter for you will be determined by:

1) How long you want it to last

2) Whether or not you want extra extra protection from water

3) The price point you're looking to buy at

With all that said, here's our in depth reviews on the best survival water filters in the world today.

The Sawyer Mini Water Filter is a filter that is nearly impossible to beat.

While it doesn't clean out anything like heavy metals (don't drink out of Chinese rivers), it does filter out 99.99999% of all protozoa and 99.9999% of all bacteria.

Yes, it really cleans out that much.

Alongside that, the Sawyer is probably the most long lasting filter on this entire list. It can be used for 100,000 gallons worth of water.

Yes, it really lasts that long.

The Sawyer Mini comes with a water pouch and sells for a great price.

  • Filters out huge numbers of bacteria and protozoa such as e-coli, giardia, etc.
  • Longest lasting water filter I could find

The Survivor Filter is a water filter that is designed to take the biggest threats out of your water for a heck of a good price.

The Survivor Filter removes pretty much everything. Not only does it get protozoa and bacteria like the other filters, but it is designed to keep out viruses (removes 99.9%) and heavy metals.

This filter is a three part filter. The first layer on the inside of this filter is cotton, which serves as a first line of defense against large particles like dirt.

Next, this filter has a layer of protection against protozoa, bacteria, and viruses called the "ultra filter".

Finally, this filter has a carbon layer intended to remove heavy metals and improve the taste of the water.

While the ultra filter part will last about 26,000 gallons, the cotton and carbon filters will only last you about 260 gallons each.

The cotton and carbon filters are entirely replaceable, but still, this seems like a lot of effort when other bottles do similar things for longer.

This bottle comes at a good price for what it does and has a lifetime warranty on it.

Pros

  • Filters out huge numbers of bacteria and protozoa such as e-coli, giardia, etc.
  • Filters out viruses
  • Eliminates heavy metals
  • Good price
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Lots of parts to keep track of
  • Some pieces don't last long, but are replaceable

Someone probably would have come to my house and shot me if I didn't include Lifestraw on this list.

This is my personal filter of choice and the one that I have in my bug out bag and my car right now.

Lifestraw is what happens when a great product is placed at a great price point. The filtration that Lifestraw provides is good at 99.9999% of protozoa and 99.9% of bacteria.

It isn't designed to remove metals or viruses, but I can live with that.

Lifestraw lasts for about 800 gallons worth of filtered water. This isn't anywhere close to Sawyer's limits, but it'll be enough for me and my family to survive for quite a while.

At time of writing, Lifestraw comes at the best price point on this list and is ideal for the budget buyer or a buyer who doesn't need all the bells and whistles.

Pros

  • Filters out large numbers of bacteria and protozoa such as e-coli, giardia, etc.
  • Lasts a long time
  • Best price point on this list at time of writing

Cons

  • Doesn't filter out metals or viruses
  • Not as long lasting as some

Etekcity's survival water filter is a product that combines excellent filtration with excellent price.

Etekcity's filter takes out 99.99999% of protozoa and 99.9999% of bacteria, same as Sawyer.

Even though it filters out as much as the Sawyer filter, it doesn't last nearly as long. The Etekcity portable filter will usually last about 400 gallons worth of water.

It does come at a great price though. The Etekcity, like many of these filters, comes with its own bladder that can be filled up.

Pros

  • Filters out huge numbers of bacteria and protozoa such as e-coli, giardia, etc.
  • Lasts for about 400 gallons worth of water
  • Comes with a hydration pouch and drinking straw
  • Great price

Cons

  • Doesn't filter out metals or viruses
  • Not extremely long lasting

The Sawyer S3 is probably the most safe water filter to drink out of in all the earth.

Not only does it filter out enormous amounts of protozoa and bacteria, but it also catches viruses, metals, pesticides, and other chemicals.

The S3 may be extremely safe to drink out of, but one of the parts of the filter will only last about 400 uses. This part is replaceable, but if the bottle holds 20 oz and you get 400 uses out of it, that means you can filter 62.5 gallons of water before replacing the part.

That's pretty anticlimactic.

Also, this is by far the most expensive survival filter on this list. But it is the highest quality filter, so there's a trade off.

Pros

  • Filters out huge numbers of bacteria and protozoa such as e-coli, giardia, etc.
  • Catches metal, viruses, pesticides, and other chemicals as well
  • Comes with a bottle
  • Replaceable parts

Cons

  • High price point
  • Not durable
